Women preserving Culture and Heritage

We’re well into Women’s Month. Under the various oppressive regimes that dominated in this region over the centuries, women have borne the weight of those violent regimes.

Whether it be in the form of physical abuse, to having lost family and friends to these violations, women continue to carry this trauma in their bodies and memories. However, they also continue to counter these abuses through their preservation of history and culture.

We are confronted with this in Cape Town in particular. To reflect on this important role that women play in preserving our history and culture, NRA spoke to:

Guests: Abdud Daiyaan Petersen, Principal Archival Research Advisor at the Cape Family Research Forum, and Professor Rozena Maart, critical race theorist, who has strong roots in the Cape as she’s grown up in District Six
