Wits University has officially launched its Surgical Skills Lab which hopes to breach the gap of South Africa’s critical shortage of expert medical specialists, including surgeons.
Costing R22-million, according to estimates, there is a need to double the current number of surgeons to fully meet the country’s medical needs.
The university notes that if it fails to replenish the pool of surgeons, both the training of all South African doctors and the delivery of healthcare for all will be compromised.
