A two-year-old boy has drowned after falling into a sewage drain in Khayelitsha yesterday afternoon.

The child was playing with other kids on his street when he fell into an open drain. The community has since placed planks over open drains to prevent another fatal incident.

Spokesperson for the Social Justice Coalition (SJC) Nkosikona Swaartbooi says over the last two months, the group reported numerous drains in and around the area for either being blocked or having no lids.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
