Aadil Moerat, fondly known as “the people’s doctor”, was a South African medical doctor, UCT alumnus and anti-apartheid activist.

He was just 33 years old when he was fatally stabbed by robbers in his practice in Gugulethu in 1998. He participated in numerous campaigns under the banner of the United Democratic Front and later the African National Congress.

He also endured arrest and detention without trial as a medical student at UCT in 1986. His courage and commitment to community service remain a shining example to us all.
