Tokyo Olympic Games Held Amid a Pandemic

The Tokyo Olympic Games which have been delayed for a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic have will finally get underway in Japan.

The 2020 summer Olympics which has had a troubled build-up will for the first time in its history have no spectators. At its opening ceremony – traditionally a highlight of the Olympics will have fewer than a thousand dignitaries and officials in attendance.

People in Japan are said to be opposed to the games with more protests expected.

Meanwhile swimmer Chad le Clos and hockey goalkeeper Phumelela Mbande are set to be the flag bearers for Team SA at the opening ceremony.

Sports Minister Nathi Mthethwa has wished the team well calling on them to compete fiercely.

The South African squad comprises of just over 180 athletes. It’s the largest contingent the country has sent to the Olympics.
