Parliament Portfolio Committee on Justice has received some rather distasteful information about the state of some of the magistrates in South Africa’s lower courts.

Last week, the committee was informed about the delays in disciplining and dismissing magistrates, following revelations that some stand accused of running pyramid schemes, threatening journalists via WhatsApp, holding imaginary court proceedings, and recruiting informants for intelligence units.

In Limpopo, a magistrate at the Lenyenye Magistrate’s Court was hauled before a disciplinary hearing for reckless conduct. How does this reflect on the quality of the justice system at its lowest level?
