South Africa’s tightened fiscal space is hampering its ability to fund key services like education.

This was the assertion by the Secretary General of the Good Party, Brett Herron. He was speaking as the country, and the Western Cape in particular, are outraged at the large cuts to teacher posts.

Herron noted that despite the budget cuts, the Western Cape should have prioritized education.

“Provincial leadership is tasked with understanding and finding solutions to what the most important needs of society are. The Western Cape government had invested in the wrong sector.” said Herron.

The provincial legislature hosted a debate on this issue on Thursday.
