Swedish Muslims are in uproar over police allowing a group of protestors to burn a copy of the holy Quran outside Stockholm’s central mosque.

The latest Islamophobic attack comes as many Muslims observed Eid al-Adha. Some 200 onlookers stood by and watched a protestor tear pages from the holy book and wiping his shoes with it before putting bacon in it and setting it alight.

After burning the Quran, police charges the man with agitation against an ethnic or national group, and a violation of a ban on fires that has been in place in Stockholm since mid-June.

In response, representatives of the mosque suggested to police to instead divert the anti-Islam protest to another location. However, they opted not to.

While Swedish police have rejected several recent applications for anti-Quran demonstrations, courts have overruled those decisions, saying they infringed on “freedom of speech”.
