At least five children have been killed in a crash on AZ Berman Drive, Mitchell’s Plain.
Three vehicles, including a bakkie, a minibus taxi and a Golden Arrow bus collided during peak hour traffic as the children were being transported to school.
Footage and images taken by bystanders show the bodies of children in school uniform laying on the wet roads. A listener told Radio 786 a vehicle had jumped a red robot causing the collision.
According to police accident occurred around 7:30am on Tuesday, before school.
Cape Town Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis has called on authorities to establish the full facts surrounding the incident so that there may be accountability for any wrongdoing.
He extended his condolences to the families of the deceased children.
Meanwhile a 12-year-old girl has been killed in Duinefontein Road, Heideveld.
She was struck by a minibus taxi.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding both incidents. Cases of culpable homicide have been opened.
