South Africa has one of the highest homicide rates in the world and men are the primary victims. A study led by the South African Medical Research Council has found that men accounted for 87% of the homicides in 2017.
A similar percentage was recorded in 2009. The most common cause of death among male murder victims were stabbings and shootings. Researchers believe that South Africa’s male homicide epidemic is hiding in plain sight’ and there is need for urgent discussion and intervention.
