South Africa could be turning into a world leader in nuclear physics research. This has been ignited by the University of the Western Cape (UWC) which was awarded a large grant by the National Research Foundation for a new nuclear spectrometer called GAMKA. Almost 10 years in the making – GAMKA involves detectors that will enhance the ability to measure gamma radiation from various nuclear reactions.
