Indications are that South Africa has passed the peak of the third wave of Covid-19 as infections are on a downward trend.
Acting Health Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi says there has been a significant drop in cases in Gauteng which was the epicentre of this wave. It recorded less than 5000 cases – down from the provincial peak which went as high as over 16 000 new cases a day.
But the minister has expressed worry at the recent gatherings that were seen during the unrest in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. She says this might lead to another surge in cases. A situation Kubayi says they are closely watching.
During the unrest some 47 000 Covid-19 vaccine doses were loss. This as an estimated 120 private pharmacies were destroyed.
