It’s a month since the 2024 general elections and South Africa has yet to form a government as it joins the arena of coalition politics at a national level. ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa has signaled that he intends to complete all negotiations and consultations this week with parties in the so-called government of national unity.

In a scathing letter Ramaphosa told the DA leader John Steenhuisen that the setting up of a government is quite urgent and the state of paralysis can’t continue. It comes as the DA has been accused of shifting the goalposts in the negotiations as it demands more cabinet positions. It’s the first time in history that the party in blue has a stab at being part of national government.
