Over the past year in Cape Town, the Passenger Rail Agency (PRASA) had invested over R 800 million in infrastructure.

PRASA’s CEO, Hishaam Emeran was speaking to Radio 786 as it addresses the problems impacting the rail services in the Western Cape.

The main concern has been getting the Central Line up and running.

It was closed due to vandalism and theft of key resources along the railway.

It has drastically impacted on people’s movement around Cape Town.

Meanwhile, PRASA has also learned that it should never have shut down the railway lines; this is when it saw a decline in the state of its infrastructure.

Emeran notes that PRASA is continuing work to improve its passenger numbers.

This has also seen a decline over the past ten years.

It was during this time, that PRASA noted how the age of the infrastructure had caught up with the parastatal.

Emeran also notes that this is when PRASA’s inability to be effective in executing its capital programme became evident.
