The police have destroyed 5 000kg of drugs with an estimated street value of R 800 million. It comes as the service has been battling the theft of contraband from their offices.

The destroyed drugs had been kept in storage pending the finalisation of related court cases. In November 2021, R200 million worth of confiscated cocaine was stolen from the Hawks offices in Durban.

The national Police Commissioner, Fannie Masemola, says that they have since put measures in place to prevent this from happening again.
