A 40-year-old man has been arrested for raping a one-year-old in Manenberg.

Speaking to Radio 786, Deputy Chairperson for the Manenberg Community Policing Forum (CPF) Vanessa Adrianse says the mother of the baby had gone to court to deal with a matter involving her ex-boyfriend and left her four-year-old and one-year-old in the care of her newly wedded husband. When she returned home and changed the baby’s nappy, the mother found bruises on the baby’s legs.

After confronting her husband, he locked her and the kids in the house and fled to Mitchells Plain. The child was rushed to the nearest hospital where doctors confirmed evidence of sexual assault.

The suspect is being detained at Manenberg police station. Once charged, he will appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court.
