Disciplinary action will soon be taken against government and Sassa officials who are receiving social grants.
Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu in a written reply to a parliamentary question from the IFP’s Liezl van der Merwe says that 3 400 people working for her department are receiving the financial support meant for the poor, while 153 Social Security Agency members are also benefiting from it.
However, the tally is far greater at 200 000.
Of this amount, some Sassa employees are receiving the foster child grant and the combination payouts which include care dependency.
Minister Zulu says that have not been suspended, while the rest have been stripped with immediate effect.
She says that processes are underway to determine the amount paid, which should not have been.
And to assess the amounts that need to be recovered from these Sassa employees.
