The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has 34 corruption cases enrolled in the country’s courts, and 128 cases awaiting decisions in the Specialised Commercial Crimes Unit. However, that it’s still experiencing challenges in finalizing these matters.
This is due to an apparent shortage in prosecutors with specialized skills to take on these cases.
The NPA briefed the media this week on the performance of the Gauteng Division in Pretoria, including in some high-profile cases.
Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Advocate Billy Molausi revealed that in most cases, forensic investigators need to be commissioned to stand as expert witnesses. However, they will have to plough through voluminous documentation in their investigation to ensure that they generate or produce a report that will benefit the court’s assessments. This takes time and resources.
