A health workers union has denounced the squandering of millions of taxpayers’ money by the Health Department as repugnant.
Nehawu says the money wastage of between R72 million and R80 million could have been used to provide the necessary resources for health personnel in the fight against Covid-19.
The union was responding to the findings of the Special Investigating Unit into R150 million corrupt Digital Vibes contract. It details the degree of corruption and mismanagement related to this contract by senior members of the department. It implicates the then Health Minister Zweli Mkhize and his then acting director general Dr Anban Pillay.
Nehawu has called on the department and government to urgently implement the recommendations of the SIU report including the instituting of disciplinary action against officials. It has also called on the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to criminally prosecute those implicated.
