The National Coloured Congress’s arguments over the Employment Equity Act is leading to a “racial cul-de-sac”.
This is the response from Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.
He was speaking after he secured an interdict against the party, which has been engaged in business shutdown demonstrations in Mitchells Plain, calling for more coloured people to have access to employment opportunities.
But Hill-Lewis contends that shutting down a business or service will drive these employment opportunities out of certain communities.
He contends that Mitchells Plain has formed part of an employment boom over the past year, but the NCC’s leader, Fadiel Adams says that many business are choosing foreign labour over locals.
Hill-Lewis also notes that the NCC’s tactics are attempts at seeking political relevance.
