The Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) has suspended its president Shaykh Irafaan Abrahams and says he will face a disciplinary process.

The suspension is pending the outcome of the election of a new president. According to the MJC this election will take place between 15 December 2023 and 15 January 2024.

The disciplinary process is expected to be completed before the election.

The MJC’s special annual general meeting (AGM) to elect other office bearers will go ahead this Saturday, but the position of president will not be contested.

A settlement was reached between Abrahams and the MJC before the matter could be heard in the Western Cape High Court. Abrahams wanted to halt the AGM which would have likely seen his unseating as his term only ends in 2026.
