There has been a change to the presidency of the Muslim Judicial Council. It follows a case last year in which then MJC President Sheikh Irafaan Abrahams disputed the setting up of a special Annual General Meeting (AGM), which would have effectively seen his removal.

A compromise was reached that the elections would go ahead in September, while leaving the president position vacant pending an investigation into the allegations of financial misconduct levelled against Abrahams who was suspended.

The compromise agreed that the MJC would elect a new leader by the deadline of January 15, this year. Details of whether disciplinary action had been taken against Abrahams are still unknown. It’s also unclear whether he had resigned from the presidency.

Radio 786 has reliably learnt that Sheikh Riyaad Fataar was appointed unopposed to the position of MJC president yesterday. When seeking confirmation of these developments, Radio 786 was told that the MJC would only release a statement on January 27th.
