Dive into the bold, tantalizing flavours of the traditional Cape Masala Steak Sandwich, where East meets West.

Imagine…. Tender slices of marinated steak infused with a savoury blend of soy sauce, hoisin, and aromatic masala spices, bringing together the rich traditions of Asian and Indian cuisine. This sandwich offers a delightful balance of sweet, spicy, and tangy notes, making each bite an unforgettable experience.

This dish can take around 45 minutes to 1 hour to prepare, depending on your pace and the prep work.

Marinating the Steak: 15-30 minutes (longer marination results in deeper flavour but can be shortened if you’re pressed for time).

Cooking the Steak and Vegetables: 10-15 minutes (cooking the steak and stir-frying the vegetables).

Toasting the Bread & Assembling: 5-10 minutes (toasting the bread and assembling the sandwich with cheese, vegetables, and garnishes).

INGREDIENTS

  • 500g steak (thinly sliced, ribeye, sirloin, or tenderized steak)
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 1 tbsp all mix masala (Taj Mahal brand)
  • 1 tbsp steak & chops spice mix (11inOne)
  • 1 tsp ginger paste
  • 1 tsp garlic paste
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil (for cooking)
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 carrot, julienned
  • 1 tbsp sriracha sauce (adjust to taste)
  • Fresh coriander or Thai basil for garnish
  • Pickled vegetables (optional, like pickled daikon and carrot)
  • 8-12 thick bread slices
  • 4-6 cheese slices (cheddar, mozzarella, or your choice)
  • Butter (for toasting the bread)

METHOD

Marinate the Steak:

In a bowl, mix the steak with soy sauce, hoisin sauce, all mix masala, steak & chops spice mix, ginger paste, and garlic paste. Let it marinate for at least 30 minutes.

Heat sesame oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Add the marinated steak and cook until tender and browned, for about 5-7 mins or until tender. Set aside.

In the same pan, stir fry the sliced onion, bell pepper, and carrot until they’re tender crisp, about 3-4 mins.

Spread a thin layer of butter on both sides of each bread slice. Toast the bread on a griddle or in a pan until golden and crispy.

On one slice of toasted bread, place a slice of cheese. Add a layer of the cooked steak, followed by the sautéed vegetables.

Top with fresh coriander or Thai basil and add pickled vegetables for extra tang, if desired.

Place another slice of cheese on top of the vegetables, and cover with another slice of toasted bread.

Place the assembled sandwich back on the pan for a minute or two to let the cheese melt slightly. Press down gently with a spatula for an even melt.

Garnish and serve

Cut the sandwich in half and serve hot.
