Today marks 12 years since mineworkers at Marikana were massacred while protesting for a living wage. The events of that day in August revealed the brutality of the state, mining companies, and the reality of the poor and working class.
As we commemorate this tragic time in South Africa’s history, we’ll also discuss why real change remains elusive, the role of NGOs, and the structural challenges that hinder progress.
Guests:
Professor Noor Nieftagodien, professor of history, the South African Research Chair in Local Histories and the head of the history workshop at Wits University
Busi Thabane, general manager at the Benchmarks Foundation
