After eight years and several delays, there is finally movement on the temporary police station in Makhaza in Khayelitsha.
Police Minister Bheki Cele and the police’s top brass held a sod-turning event at the construction site.
Deputy national police commissioner, Shadrack Sibiya says they hope to have a temporary police station by the end of this year while the construction of a permanent building is expected to be completed in the next two years.
The Makhaza police station was one of the recommendations of the 2013 Khayelitsha commission of inquiry which found that there is a breakdown in trust between police and the community. It’s hoped that this policing site will bring about some form of safety and security for this Khayelitsha community.
