A law enforcement officer has been shot and injured during an exchange of fire with a suspect in Mfuleni.

It’s understood that officers attached to the Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) had stopped a man walking in the streets after midnight. Upon questioning, the man pulled out a firearm, and threatened to shoot the officers.

The City’s Law Enforcement spokesperson says attempts to dissuade him failed. An officer was shot in the foot. The suspect was also shot as the officers retaliated.

A 9mm pistol and ammunition were recovered.

The suspect faces charges of attempted murder as well as being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
