The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is expected to hold another emergency meeting over the recurring acts of desecration of the Holy Qur’an in Europe.
Iraq’s Foreign Ministry requested the meeting after the past week’s burning of Islam’s holy book in Sweden and Denmark. However, no date has yet been announced for the meeting.
Baghdad says they need to importantly discuss a collective stance towards the desecration and mechanisms to confront the phenomenon of Islamophobia. It further notes that these provocative and heinous practices against Islamic sanctities are being fuelled by laws under the pretext of freedom of expression and the right to demonstrate.
Iraq has warned that these acts of sacrilege only pose a threat to social peace and security. It has called practices that disgrace religious symbols to be criminalised.
