Masiphumelele is in need of proper housing. This is according to Cape Town Mayor Dan Plato. He was speaking amid the backdrop of Human Settlements Minister Lindiwe Sisulu’s site visit to the area following the devastating fire last Thursday. Plato says City officials met with the minister to assess the situation. Plato says in the report he received, the minister made it clear that housing in the area should take place in the next couple of months.
However, Plato says while this sounds good in theory it does take 4 – 6 years for houses to be built because processes need to be followed. The mayor also expressed confidence that the City will secure the R18 million Relief Fund from the national government to provide starter kits for affected families in Masiphumelele.
