In the early hours of Sunday morning, public order police were called to Western Cape Premier Alan Winde’s official residence to remove about 200 housing activists who attempted to enter the property.

Housing lobby group, Reclaim the City said that the demonstration was aimed to highlighting what it calls a “housing crisis” in the province.

Ndifuna Ukwazi’s Buhle Booi who was at the demonstration claims that activists proposals to address the housing crisis issue have been ignored by the Premier. However, Winde strongly refuted the allegations.

The Premier argued that the actions made by housing activists are hindering social housing development by illegally occupying spaces earmarked for affordable housing projects.

Despite the commotion outside the premier’s residence at the weekend, Winde said that he is looking forward to meeting with Reclaim the City to address their concerns.
