The Department of Agriculture’s Directorate of Inspection Services is removing fake honey products from South African store shelves.

Following several complaints, authorities are targeting mislabeled “honey-based” syrups, which pose health risks to consumers.

Recent inspections in Gauteng led to the seizure of over 1,400 mislabeled products and fines for two wholesalers. Experts warn that counterfeit honey undermines local producers and misleads consumers.

The department’s actions aim to protect public health and ensure product authenticity. Further testing will determine the true composition of the seized products.
