In the latest from Gabon, coup leaders say that President Ali Bongo Ondimba is under house arrest and one of his sons has been arrested for what they call “treason”.
Noureddin Bongo Valentin is one of Bongo’s sons and close advisor.
He, along with chief of staff Ian Ghislain Ngoulou as well as his deputy, two other presidential advisors and the two top officials in the ruling Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG) have been taken in by the coup leaders.
They are accused of treason, embezzlement, corruption and falsifying the president’s signature, among other allegations.
A group of rebellious military officers declared a coup in the central African nation, minutes after the results of the presidential election showed that President Bongo had won a third term.
