A Cape Town high school learner is set to appear in court on Monday after being found in the possession of a firearm and ammunition on school grounds.
Western Cape police spokesperson Wesley Twigg says members attached to the Makhaza Crime Prevention Unit were called to a school where they searched a 19-year-old learner who had a firearm in his possession.
The gun was confiscated, including eight rounds of ammunition. This revelation comes amid the backdrop of several school shootings that recently rocked the country.
In February, a grade 6 learner was shot and killed his principal in Ekurhuleni in Gauteng. In KwaZulu-Natal last week, a 46-year-old teacher in Pinetown was shot several times on school premises by unknown gunmen.
