The public demise of fake TikTok doctor Matthew Lani has exposed the risk that fake doctors and professionals pose to the public. This is the assertion of the South African Medical Association (SAMA). Lani developed a large following on social media with many looking to him for medical advice through his content. He claimed to have been employed by the Gauteng Health Department.
However, the department noted that this is not the case and has since registered a criminal case of impersonating a doctor. The matter is being dealt with by the police. Lani also claimed to have graduated from the University of Witwatersrand. However, the institution disavowed him and insisted that he did not graduate.
SAMA says Lani’s ill practice undermines trust and integrity of the healthcare system. In addition, it is jeopardizing the health of those who seek care. In response, Lani maintained that he is innocent.
