Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has withdrawn a Ministerial determination for procuring 2,500 MW of new nuclear capacity.
This decision comes ahead of a court case initiated by SAFCEI and Earthlife Africa Johannesburg, challenging the legality of the determination. The groups argue that there was insufficient public consultation by Nersa.
Minister Ramokgopa has acknowledged the need for updated plans and has promised future consultations. Despite the withdrawal, he says that government remains committed to new nuclear capacity, ensuring that it aligns with updated energy plans.
The court case is scheduled for October 15 and 16.
