Donald Trump has claimed victory in the US presidential elections.
Trump is leading with 267 electoral votes, just three shy of a victory while the Democrats candidate Kamala Harris trails with only 214 electoral votes.
The Republicans have also secured the Senate which Trump says will help him to enact his agenda.
Trump claimed that his party was on track to win the House of Representatives, but the control of the chamber is likely not be known for days.
Meanwhile, political economist, Dr Devaka Gunarwardena said that the Republican party has been adept at capturing power despite not being in governance. It follows a Democrat Presidency under Joe Biden.
“In the years where Democrats are in governance, Republicans work to capture power through the State and Legislative bodies, and the Supreme Court.” said Gunarwardena.
Donald Trump has vowed to crack down on immigration and beckon in a historic age of US prosperity.
