It’s unclear if the Covid-19 Delta variant’s disease pattern is more or less severe than it’s Beta counterpart.

Researchers in the United Kingdom have found that the early stages of the Delta variant present like a mild flu.

Symptoms include a runny nose, coughing and sore throat. South Africa is also feeling the impact of this variant that has already taken its toll on India and other parts of the world.

Last night, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced measures to mitigate the spread of this variant, which is dominating the third wave of Covid-19 infections in at least five of South Africa’s provinces.

Western Cape Health Department Chief of Operations, Dr Saadiq Karriem says that the most immediate line of defence against the Delta variant remains masking up and staying away from gatherings.

He says that the vaccine rollout will help in stopping the spread.
