South Africans must not be fooled by the DA’s call for a parliamentary debate on NERSA’s granting Eskom yet another tariff increase. This is the reminder from researcher with Trade Unions for energy democracy, Brian Kamanzi.
Kamanzi stressed that DA-led municipalities are trying to protect the profits they make from electricity procurement and are not really concerned with how citizens will be impacted by these price hikes.
“This will always be the case until government realises that electricity is a public good, and must be covered by the state.” said Kamanzi.
His comments follow Eskom’s request to the national energy regulator for a 36% tariff hike, which it believes will help it recover some of its losses.
