Labour federation Cosatu and affiliated unions have handed over their memorandum of demands to Parliament.
Unions are demanding the reduction of the cost of fuel, food and electricity prices; for Eskom’s entire board to step aside including CEO Andre de Ruyter, and for government to reduce the electricity tariff.
They are also demanding that the petrol prices be investigated.
The shutdown, which was organised by labour federations, Cosatu and Saftu, was aimed at highlighting the various forms of government’s failures to fix the country’s economy.
But organisations like the Housing Assembly, says that the City of Cape Town is failing to enforce policies that provides greater access to economic opportunities.
The group’s secretary, Stephen Maciko has accused the Democratic Alliance and the City of misleading the public, and just signing memoranda with no action.
