Colossal Biosciences claims to have “de-extincted” the dire wolf using advanced genetic engineering and ancient DNA, resulting in three puppies named Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi.

However, experts like Zoologist Philip Seddon argue these are genetically modified grey wolves, not true dire wolves.

Despite the excitement, scientists highlight significant differences between these wolves and the original dire wolves.

Paleogeneticist Dr Nic Rawlence, says that the ancient dire wolf DNA, which was extracted from fossilised remains – is too degraded and damaged to biologically copy or clone. He contends that instead of cloning the dire wolf, Colossal had created a hybrid. This as they used combined grey wolf and dire wolf DNA.
