The City of Cape Town is headed to court again, this time to sue the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) for damages incurred during the eight-day taxi strike.
Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis says that all departments are expected to provide an estimate of the damage.
It’s unclear if this move will impact the shaky agreement between the City and taxi operators.
Hill-Lewis says that the City, the Western Cape government, and the taxi industry had reached an agreement to end the strike.
But this does not mean that the taxi industry is absolved of the responsibility for the damage caused during the strike.
Santaco’s Western Cape general secretary, Ryno Saaiers, says that they dispute the City’s allegations that its members had caused any violence during the stay-away.
He says that they had instructed their members to park their vehicles and not engage in any violence.
