Calls for the South African Hajj and Umrah Council (Sahuc) to be disbanded has intensified following a discussion hosted by the Commission for Cultural, Religious and Linguistic (CRL) Communities.
The meeting was held amid the backdrop of the Department of Internal Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) requesting that the CRL try to ascertain whether Muslims wanting to perform the Hajj and Umrah are allowed to do it through a body or council, and not the government. Hajj agencies have also come under fire for taking advantage of pilgrims who are still awaiting reimbursement after the pilgrimage was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak.
