The police have been urged to play a more active and supportive role in assisting victims of gender-based violence.

Women in Khayelitsha are living in fear following a spate of brutal attacks in the area.

Councilor Xolisa Peter says that even elderly women are being raped and left for dead.

She says that survivors of these attacks live in fear, as the alleged perpetrators are roaming free.

The community is calling for harsher penalties for those found guilty of these crimes.

Meanwhile, in Johannesburg, an alleged child rapist is still at large.

He was reportedly assisted by the management of a day care centre.

The suspect was referred to as “uncle” by the children.

At least two cases of children being molested by the suspect have been reported.

The director the Teddy Bear Clinic, Dr Shaheda Omar says that the victims have been twice traumatized, as the police and day-care have failed to bring the suspect to justice.
