A new head of the Western Cape Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) has been appointed, along with almost 50 additional officers. However, Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile did not share the details of who has taken up the position.
The former head of the unit, Major General Andre Lincoln, retired in October 2021. The unit has been under scrutiny, especially following the assassination of top AGU detective Charl Kinnear. The unit also investigates highly sensitive cases, which sometimes implicated fellow officers.
