The ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) will be launching a new campaign to fix South Africa’s struggling municipalities.
It follows recent reports painting a rather grim picture of local governments, with only 34 out of 257 municipalities achieving clean audits last year.
During an NEC meeting in Boksburg on Saturday, the ANC’s top leadership responded to the findings by both the Auditor General (AG) and Corruption Watch, which highlighted the widespread financial mismanagement and corruption at municipal level.
ANC NEC member Dickson Masemola said that the party is taking an aggressive stance against corruption across all levels of government.
The committee also stressed that it is now working on a comprehensive plan to strengthen local governance.
