There will be some circumstances in which compensation will be granted for land that the government intends to expropriate.

Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Patricia de Lille, says that in these cases, the courts will have to intervene. She also told Radio 786’s On the Agenda, that this will be attended to as when no agreement can be reached.

Meanwhile, the public hearings into land reform will resume in three provinces. The process was hampered due to the covid-19 pandemic.

The chairperson of the parliamentary ad hoc committee tasked with amending the Constitution relating to land reform, Dr Mathole Motshekga says that the process will take its course, despite the opposition.

“Only people who are not interested in the well-fare of all South Africans both black and white, and the political instability of the country will have concerns.”

Dr Motshekga also noted that these critics of land expropriation only need to look at the levels of inequality across the country to understand that measures to amend this need to be implemented.

The Land Expropriation Bill has been gazetted by Minister de Lille. She says that her department is already preparing a register of all expropriation cases that will be addressed once the bill is passed.
