The government has until February 10th to respond to court papers lodged by the families of Apartheid-era victims, regarding whether it will take responsibility for failing to investigate and prosecute those behind the crimes.
Odette Geldenhuys, Head of the Pro Bono Team at Webber Wentzel, says their application has listed several high-ranking officials, including the President of South Africa, for not fulfilling their duty to hold Apartheid-era officials accountable.
The families have also called on the government to institute a commission of inquiry into Apartheid-era crimes.
Geldenhuys states that the founding court papers provide three sources of facts and evidence indicating political interference.
