The City of Cape Town will no longer allow illegal occupation of public spaces.
This is the assertion by Cape Town Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis. On Friday, more than 120 vagrants squatting outside the Castle of Good Hope were forcibly evicted.
The mayor said that evicting people illegally occupying state-owned property had been challenging due to legal complexities.
Hill-Lewis added that the government departments had also been slow to respond to requests for the eviction of illegal occupiers.
The mayor praised the teams carrying out the evictions for handling occupiers with dignity, allowing them to identify their personal belongings to be stored in Ndabeni until they can come and collect it.
