The Department of Employment and Labour plans to hire nearly 20 000 inspectors to combat illegal labour practices.
Minister Nomakhosazana Meth says that this initiative aims to boost the inspectorate from just 2 000 to 20 000 over the next few years.
This increase will enhance the department’s ability to conduct thorough audits and inspections nationwide. A new risk profiling system will prioritize high-risk areas, ensuring more efficient enforcement.
The department’s recent raid at a Pretoria restaurant highlighted the urgency of these measures.
Minister Meth emphasized that the goal is not just enforcement, but also promoting social justice and economic prosperity.
