The Southern African Faith Communities’ Environment Institute has expressed their unhappiness about the life-extension of the Koeberg nuclear plant’s Unit 1.

SAFCEI’s Executive Director Francesca de Gasparis has accused the National Nuclear Regulator of not taking note of the public or experts’ input.

She further asserts that so many important safety documents were out of date. She believes that the regulator would not have reached this conclusion if it had considered those inputs.

The NNR says it held eight public consultations and a technical review to reach its decision. It adds that Eskom met the requirement for an extension.
