Justice Dikgang Moseneke is set to be part of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) bench that will hear a case of genocide against the colonial settler entity of Israel. The South African government approached Moseneke as Professor Dire Tladi tenure at the ICJ only starts next month.
The Department of International Relation and Cooperation explains that if a state party in the case does not have a judge of its nationality on the bench it may choose a person to sit as a judge in this instance. Late last month South Africa asked the ICJ for an urgent order to declare that Israel is in breach of its obligations under the 1948 Genocide Convention in its aggression on Gaza.
More than 22 000 Palestinians have been slaughtered and close to 60 000 others have been wounded. The case is set to be heard on Thursday and Friday next week. The ICJ usually takes one or two weeks to issue a decision on emergency matters. The court’s rulings are final, but it has no authority to enforce them. The Zionist Israel has said that it will appear before the court to challenge the South African move.
